Project: Understanding electrolyte-dependent gassing behavior of LMFP as next-generation positive electrode material Continuous efforts have been practiced on pursuing energy storage systems with high energy density, long lifespan, and low cost. Among them, Li-ion batteries have conquered the portable electronics market and are widely employed for electric transportation. As the demand for low-budget electric vehicles with long cruising ranges is increasing, the energy density of the current state-of-the-art electrode material LiFePO4 (LFP), advantageous from an environmental and economical point of view, no longer satisfies the needs. An alternative olivine cathode material, LiMnPO4 (LMP), shares the same theoretical capacity as LFP and comes with the benefit of a higher operational voltage of 4.1 V, resulting in a 21% increase in energy density. However, due to the material’s low conductivity and structural instability, LiMnPO4 suffers from low capacity retention. The combination of LFP and LMP, a solid solution called LiMnxFe1-xPO4 (LMFP), has therefore attracted global interest in the industry and in academia. Your project involves the assembly of cells with pre-made LMFP electrodes followed by electrochemical characterization and contributes to our effort of elucidating the electrolyte-dependent gassing behavior of LMFP cells, a critical input for durability and safety considerations. | 2100 CHF Monthly | 8.4 daily, 42.0 weekly | Paul Scherrer Institut | Villigen PSI | www.psi.ch | Employer | 1750 CHF Monthly | 900 CHF Monthly | EU/EFTA passport required | COBE | |||||

Project: Development and validation of HPGe-detector models for Monte Carlo simulations Operating particle accelerator facilities and nuclear installations is accompanied by ionizing radiation, which can occur during and after operation. This radiation can cover a wide range of energies and different types of particles. The gold standard for the measurement and characterization of gamma radiation are high-purity Germanium (HPGe) detectors. The quantitative analysis of the data measured with these detectors requires an energy and geometry dependent efficiency correction. This correction can be obtained using particle transport simulations based on Monte Carlo techniques. The accuracy of the corrections relies on a realistic geometry model of the measurement setup and the HPGe detector. In addition, experimental and theoretical validations are crucial to minimize systematic uncertainties. We seek a student who will - develop geometric models of HPGe-detectors and measurement setups - perform Monte Carlo simulations - perform measurements using HPGe-detectors - compare results with reference measurements and other methods | 2100 CHF Monthly | 8.4 daily, 42.0 weekly | Paul Scherrer Institut | Villigen PSI | www.psi.ch | Employer | 1750 CHF Monthly | 900 CHF Monthly | Students with any NON-EU/EFTA nationality need for the visa and work permit an official letter from their university, confirming that the internship is compulsory (IAESTE Switzerland will apply for them). In recent decades, the production of plastics and electrical and electronic devices has rapidly increased due to technological advancements and the develop of the society. Plastic materials are ever-present in almost all elements of our daily lives due to their low production cost and the ease of generating specific compounds to meet specific needs. Electronic devices, such as computers and mobile phones, have also become integral parts of our daily existence. Both plastic materials and electronic devices have a highly heterogeneous composition, featuring valuable elements as well as potentially hazardous ones. Therefore, their management, once their life cycle concludes, poses technological, economic, and environmental challenges. In the management of such products, reuse and recycling are preferred methods, followed by energy recovery and, ultimately, landfill disposal. In all these cases, the recovery of various materials with economic value (individual plastics, metals, or rare earth elements) or potential hazards (flame retardants or chemical elements such as fluorines or bromides) significantly enhances the management process. Physical concentration processes have emerged as a suitable option for recycling and environmental protection tasks. The project performed at the Institute of Chemical Process Fundamentals aims to employ different physical concentration devices the recycling of plastic and electrical and electronic waste from various industries and municipal sources. This project has two main objectives: the recovery valuable materials from such waste and the separation of various individual plastics or plastic families characterized by chemically compatible compositions conducive to repolymerization or possessing the potential for energy valorization. | 14500 CZK Monthly | 8.0 daily, 40.0 weekly | Institute of Chemical Process Fundamentals of the CAS, v. v. i. | Prague | www.icpf.cas.cz | IAESTE | 11000 CZK Monthly | 5500 CZK Monthly | Please follow the instructions for preparing the nomination documents and the visa process in the attached document. Specifically, students can participate in theoretical simulations and predictions of spectra spanning the entire electromagnetic spectrum. These simulations are grounded in quantum chemistry methodologies commonly implemented in software packages such as Gaussian and Cfour. They offer versatile applications across various scientific domains. For example, students can investigate chemical reactions of small molecules in Earth's atmosphere and exoplanets to elucidate physicochemical conditions in remote environments. Another avenue of exploration involves the precise determination of rovibrational properties of small molecules, catering to the demands of highly resolved microwave spectroscopy. Such analyses often facilitate the discovery of novel species within interstellar environments. Moreover, students have the opportunity to engage in conformational analysis of drugs, enabling the identification of specific molecules or their conformers within forensic materials. The project will be implemented in the laboratory of the Institute of Theoretical and Experimental Electrical Engineering, which is equipped with modern laboratory equipment (power supplies, oscilloscopes, signal sources, computing equipment, soldering stations). Electrical impedance tomography is a relatively new method for detecting the concentrations of heterogeneous multiphase mixtures in a selected fluid profile. The principle of the method is to place a number of electrodes (for example 16) in the wall around the profile to be measured and then rapidly measure the mutual impedance between all combinations of electrodes. From the measured impedances, the distribution of different heterogeneous components, each with a different specific impedance, can then be back-calculated in the measured profile. The measurement of the impedances is computer controlled and it is possible to obtain the distribution fields of the heterogeneous components or concentrations even in real time. | 15000 CZK Monthly | 8.0 daily, 40.0 weekly | Brno University of Technology Department: Department of Theoretical and Experimental Electrical Engineering | Brno | https://www.utee.fekt.vut.cz/ | IAESTE | 11000 CZK Monthly | 5000 CZK Monthly | Please follow the instructions for preparing nomination documents and the visa process in the attached document. SHIPTRAP focusses on the investigation of the nuclear structure evolution far from stability and is addressing the properties of heavy and superheavy elements in particular. The heaviest elements owe their existence to nuclear shell effects in a subtle balance of the Coulomb interaction and the strong interaction. They often feature a distinct nuclear structure and often isomeric states at low excitation energies occur. Mass spectrometry is a powerful method to reveal the nuclear structure evolution and identify nuclear isomers even for nuclides with lowest production rates. Based on pioneering measurements on No and Lr isotopes at SHIPTRAP technical and methodical developments are under way to extend the reach of Penning trap mass spectrometry towards heavier and more exotic nuclides. These developments aim at reaching higher precision, higher mass resolving power and ultimate sensitivity. The phase-imaging technique PI-ICR that has recently been developed at SHIPTRAP provides significantly enhanced mass resolving power. Another ongoing development is related to the development of single-ion mass measurement methods, for example by electronic detection techniques. The intern will participate in the development activities as well as in measurement campaigns. The work will be carried out at the GSI in the SHE physics department at GSI. The different growth and lithography parameters will be studied in order to develop high aspect ratio micro-structures. The fabricated devices will be measured mainly by atomic force and secondary electron- microscopies and by photoluminescence measurement. In this project, we want to develop new integrated materials on Si substrate made by Pulsed Laser Deposition and liftoff processing. PLD is a high quality growth technique commonly used for many applications in photonics which can provide for instance low loss waveguides grown at room temperature. In PLD, an intense pulsed laser beam is focused through an optical window on a solid or liquid target under vacuum. If the target absorbs enough energy, the laser-material interaction leads to the formation of a plasma consisting of partially ionized species directed perpendicularly to the target surface, which can deposit on the substrate facing the target. It has the advantage that the molecules reaching the surface have an energy which can exceed the thermal energy which allows to envision lift-off processing for a fast integration. Recently, we have shown that rare earth doped waveguides and grattings can be made by combining PLD and liftoff processing. Such results are extremely promising since they open a way to new materials integration on Si platform. However, we want now to optimize the material and processing to improve the device resolution for practical applications. | 630 EUR Monthly | 7.0 daily, 35.0 weekly | Institut Lumière Matière Lyon I | Villeurbanne | Trainee with help of IAESTE | 500 EUR Monthly | 500 EUR Monthly | - Please don't forget the enrollment certificate in the nomination, with a precise end date of the certificate (Month + Year) which should be later than the desired end date of internship. - Each student can ask for a financial help for accommodation of 90-130 € to the French administration (APL from CAF). - You can get in touch with your school if you are eligible to any Erasmus funding or other grants (from 410€ to 690€).
